Alabama Drivers License Change of Address

Have you recently moved to Alabama, or have you changed residences within the state? The Driver License Division (DLD) recommends that you update this information as soon as possible. We've collected information to help save you time when changing the address on your drivers license in Alabama. Select from the options below to get started.

1: Get Started with Online Application Assistance

Online application assistance can simplify the process for many DLD related services for a fee, including: renewing your license, applying for a license, registering a vehicle, replacing your license, changing your address and more. In addition to the free forms and general instructions available from the DLD offices or websites, you will receive value added products such as a comprehensive Easy Guide containing information relevant to your service needs. Where possible, we will prepare your DLD forms and/or provide links to DLD online services. You will also receive 30 days of both emergency Roadside Assistance and the Repair Assist consultation service from Road America. Other benefits include an ongoing monthly newsletter and a quarterly magazine covering important updates that affect drivers, important safety tips, trends, legislative updates and ways to save money on vehicle-related services.

2: By mail

Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the DLD in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local DLD.

3: Via a DLD office

If you prefer to access DLD services in person or your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at a physical DLD office location. Varying DLD offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the DLD closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your local DLD allows you to make a personal appointment. Read more below to see if an in-person visit is either preferred or required.

Alabama Address Change Procedures

When a driver changes his or her mailing address, the driver has a legal obligation to update the address appearing on the license within 30 days of moving. Drivers can go to their local DLD office to change the address on their Alabama drivers license. They will need to provide:

  • Current drivers license
  • Date of birth
  • Proof of new address (utility bills, credit card statements, etc)

The fee for processing your change of address is $33.

Changing Your Address by Mail

Drivers should be aware that they can apply for a change of address on their driver license via mail. This method is only permitted when the driver requests a change of address in person at a local DLD office. If you wish to process a change of address on your driver license by mail, you will need to send your full name and address, with your license number to:

Driver License Division
P.O. Box 1471
Montgomery, AL 36102

An updated license with your new address will be issued when your license is due for renewal.

Changing Your Address Online

While you can download helpful documents, online processing is not yet available in Alabama. If a driver wishes to change the address on his or her Alabama driver's license and receive a name change by mail, he or she will still have to go to a local DLD office. For purposes of an Alabama change of address and name change, a driver may need to visit a probate judge to update his or her car title and registration. If out-of-state, the driver is still able to perform an Alabama change of address via mail.
