How To Renew Your Alabama Drivers License

1: Get Started with Online Application Assistance

Online application assistance can simplify the process for many DLD related services for a fee, including: renewing your license, applying for a license, registering a vehicle, replacing your license, changing your address and more. In addition to the free forms and general instructions available from the DLD offices or websites, you will receive value added products such as a comprehensive Easy Guide containing information relevant to your service needs. 2: By mail

Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the DLD in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local DLD.

3: Via a DLD office

If you prefer to access DLD services in person or your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at a physical DLD office location. Varying DLD offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the DLD closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your local DLD allows you to make a personal appointment. Read more below to see if an in-person visit is either preferred or required.




Renewing Your Alabama Drivers License

Your Alabama drivers license expires four years after it was issued. You will be sent a renewal notice warning you that it's set to expire. A driver can renew by mail, or complete an Alabama driver license renewal in person at a local DLD office. Please note that you may download your form and checklist, but your license may not be renewed online. A driver may renew their license up to 60 days before it expires and within 60 days after it expires without penalty.

An Alabama resident on who is in the military and on active duty, or their dependents, may submit for renewal by mail.

Renewal Fee

The required fee to renew your drivers license is $23.50 and must be posted to the Alabama DLD driver license division along with a money order or cashier's check. These checks or money orders should be made payable to the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

Renewing an Alabama Driver License In Person

An Alabama driver license renewal can be done in person at a local DLD. A driver must remember to have his or her expired driver license with them. The driver also must provide acceptable proof of identity, including a Social Security card or Social Security statement along with one of the following:

  • U.S. Birth Certificate
  • U.S. Passport
  • Alabama Identification Card
  • Alabama Driver's License
  • Temporary license or ID

A driver's Social Security card alone is not sufficient documentation for renewal purposes. Only original documents will be acceptable as proof of identity. The driver will be issued a temporary drivers license that is valid until the new license comes in the mail in approximately two weeks.

Renewing an Alabama Driver License By Mail

Alabama residents who are out of the state when their driver license renewal is due should download and fill out the Alabama drivers license renewal form available on the Alabama Department of Public Safety website. Drivers should mail in their completed renewal form along with a $23 fee to the Department of Public Safety address listed on the state's website. Drivers should be sure to include all required documents, as shown on their renewal form, in this mailing.

A driver needing to renew by mail should also include their full name, address, date of birth, social security number and out-of-state address. If out of state, they will need to give a valid reason for being out of state. A driver may renew without being tested, as long as they're renewing within three years of the expiration date. If a driver does renew within that three-year period, their Alabama drivers license will be valid for four years from date of expiration and not from date of renewal.
